Unlike the previous two record holders, the overall look is rather unconventional (front, anyway). It has a broad rectangle with rounded sides (tonneau-shaped) and the hour aperture is very small relative to the overall dial. The hours and minutes are in a central sub-dial at the top, with an exposed balance on the right, both protected by sapphire crystal. The watch celebrates Richard Mille's partnership with Ferrari starting in 2021, so it's only natural (and prominent) for the Italian automaker's logo to sit on the bottom.
You're not going to have a crown on a 1.75mm case, so an interesting solution involves placing two steel "crowns" on the face. On the upper left is a switch that toggles between winding (W) and setting (H), while the winding crown, located below, also sets the time. Special keys are required to operate these mechanisms. Unlike the Bulgari and Piaget approaches to ultra-thin movements, the caseback does not act as a baseplate. Richard Mille's 1.18mm hand-wound RM UP-01 caliber is self-contained like a traditional movement, housed in the case rather than integrated. Patented design with titanium alloy balance wheel and improved anchor fork, the gear train is arranged horizontally without stacking. Most of the movement is made of titanium, which can resist accelerations in excess of 5,000 Gs, so the watch is clearly durable enough. The movement, also surprisingly thin, beats at 4Hz and has a power reserve of 45 hours. It was designed in collaboration with Audemars Piguet Renaud & Papi.
